Abstract

The threat coming from Islamist terrorism which European countries have been facing in recent years has led to important and controversial reforms in the police, substantive criminal and even penitentiary areas. However, it has not been until recently that different countries have also adopted a complementary strategy, away from strictly punitive mechanisms, and aimed at tackling not less important aspects such as the prevention of radicalization and de-radicalization. From this context, the following work aims to describe the strategies and programs developed in recent years in several European countries to effectively counteract Islamist radicalization. In order to do so, the analysis not only focuses on describing the programs and initiatives, but also highlights their positive and negative aspects.
